How much caffeine is in your coffee?
Caffeine has shown to improve exercise performance in many types of sports (1, 2). The recommended dose to improve performance ranges from 200-500 mg (3).
Caffeine is often ingested via coffee consumption. The average cup of coffee contains around 85 mg of caffeine. Coffee can also be produced from different blends of beans, resulting in specialty coffees such as ‘Italian Roast’.
The current study investigated the caffeine content of various specialty coffees. In addition, they investigated one specialty coffee 6 days in a row from the same coffee shop.
The caffeine content in the specialty coffees (~470 ml) ranged from 143 to 259 mg.
More importantly, even when one particular specialty coffee was bought 6 days in a row from the same location, the caffeine content in that drink varied drastically. The caffeine content in the tested Starbucks breakfast blend ranged from 259 to 564 mg.
Some of the factors that may impact the caffeine content of coffee are the exact composition of coffee beans, the roasting method, the grinding, the water to coffee ratio, and the length of the brewing time.
